      Very Reliable City Car

by little car that could on 4/22/2026 9:04:17 AM

I bought my car new 9 years ago, no regrets, and I'm not selling it anytime soon. You have to like small cars in order to be happy with the Spark. I now have 157k miles on my manual transmission Spark, and the only problem outside of basic maintenance was the windshield washer fluid pump going out, and after 8 years a a/c refrigerant top off (R1234yf is very leak prone on all vehicles according to my mechanic), and the cheap painted plastic hubcaps are flaking off. I had a aftermarket cruise control installed soon after buying. I've gone through 3 sets of tires, and 2 batteries. I get a discount on the ferries for being under 14ft long, and parking on crowded city streets is a breeze. My original front brakes lasted 143k miles. I've changed the spark plugs, coolant, and gearbox fluid around the 100k mark. I have no issues climbing steep mountain passes and hills with the a/c on. The rear end is a bit twitchy on ice and gravel roads due to the short wheelbase (get the best tires you can buy). Avoid the automatic Spark, the CVT ruins the driving experience, and it's a JATCO CVT, same unit as Nissan Versa, and is failure prone even with regular CVT fluid changes.

      Fantasic but no sports car

by ECCC on 8/25/2024 10:01:59 PM

I get 42-50 mpg between intown and freeway. So around 400 miles on a 9 gallon tank. The 5 spd manual is smooth and forgiving. Has hill start when the hill is really big. It is low on power but still very able to hold 60-65 with zero problems. Took the backs of the rear seat out and have a ton of room. Radio is decent and has Bluetooth. The AC is the best I have ever seen. Super cold and gets cold almost instantly. I would for sure change the oil and trans axle oil more often than recommend by the book Trans is GL4 75-85 transaxle oil (2quarts) FYI not listed in book but I called the dealer. Brakes are THERE and will stop you on the spot. Over all extremely stable at all speeds

      First Car I Ever Financed

by Skylar on 11/16/2023 8:44:36 PM

I got my spark in 2021 with 45k miles, and two years later the only thing I've had to do is replace the battery. Yeah it's not the fastest, but I really don't know what you'd expect from 98 hp. Gas mileage is almost as good a driving a Prius, and for how small it is nearly everyone who has rode in the back seat says they still have plenty of room. Really sad to hear they discontinued them.
